Notebook Weddings: A unique alternative to traditional Wedding Planning

Upload from March 08, 2012

I met up with Jillian Christison a few weeks ago to hear more about her business. I was really excited about her services so I thought I would share with you a little more about Notebook Weddings.

Tell us about Notebook Weddings and how your services differ from traditional planning

Notebook Weddings is not a full service wedding planning company. Our goal is to help couples getting married get a kick start to their planning by providing them with a customized wedding planner, called a Notebook. Included in the Notebook, we provide tips on etiquette, detailed specific timelines, task lists, vendor suggestions, and budget tracking, all specific to your wedding date, theme, budget and desires. We’ll do all of the legwork, and follow up with monthly communication, thus allowing you to successfully go about planning your big day with a little more clarity and a lot less stress!

How did you get into the Wedding Industry?

I planned my own wedding years back and fell in love with it. I worked off two planning books that were given to me and found that I had to bounce back and forth between the two, so I came up with the idea to create a personalized planning book that would be completely unique for each individual bride and groom.

Elaborate on the personalized Notebooks that you create for each client

My Notebooks are beautifully hand bound here in Vancouver so not only are they a very useful tool for the DIY couple but they also provide a lovely keepsake after all is said and done. A 1-2 hour consultation is included at the begininng of the process to determine your budget, vision, style, and specific needs. To eliminate the need for endless hours of searching on your own, I provide a tailored and well-researched selection of vendors that fit your needs. Expenditure tracking, assistance with an itinerary, plus advice on etiquette, and logistics, are all included in our services along with a Notebook, of which you choose the colour, design, and partial layout.

Number one money saver or budgeting tip?

Saving money really depends on each individual couple. I think that it’s important to decide in the beginning what aspects of your wedding are very important and what areas you both agree will not need much attention financially. Once you have determined where you want to allot your money, then you can focus on staying on budget and cutting costs where necessary.

Why should couples hire a planner like yourself?

My ideal client is a couple or bride who just doesn’t know where to start. They may need some clarity, help weeding through vendors or some answers to the typical question ‘How on earth do I plan a wedding?’ I offer couples an alternative to traditional planning by simply giving them a game plan and some direction in terms of what to do and when to do it. I’m here to support them, to answer any questions and offer any help that they may need throughout their engagement so that they can enjoy themselves during this time. I love it when a plan comes together and I love coordinating with people to help a couple on a very very special day. It puts a smile on my face!

5 Things You Will Love About Steveston

Upload from February 29, 2012

I always get asked by different people what they should check out while they are in Steveston. For those of you who live in Steveston, you may already be aware of these jems, but for those who are planning a day trip or planning to come to the studio for a visit, you should check out some of my favourite spots while you are here.

1. Britannia Heritage Shipyards

This is one of my favourite places to walk. If you park here, you can actually walk along the water to Steveston Village in about 5-10 minutes. On the weekends some of the buildings are open and you can take a look around.

2. Blue Canoe Restaurant

They definitely have the BEST patio in Steveston and, in my opinion, the one of the best patio’s in the lower mainland . I love sitting at the high bar tables on the patio in the summer and watching the sunset. You can see all the way to the islands and on the weekend catch a glimpse of the fish market going on below. If it’s cold, they also have blankets

3. The Dyke

You can walk or cycle around Lulu Island on the Dyke path. With London Farm, Britannia Shipyards, Gary Point and Steveston Village on it’s path, it makes for a great day out. You can even rent bikes at London Landing if you don’t want to bring your own. On a clear day, you will even take in views of Mount Baker and the local mountains.

4. Steveston Farmer’s and Artisan Market

In the Winter the Market is located in the Gulf of Georgia Cannery and in the summer the tents and music line the steveston streets. Everything from local produce, plants, artwork and jewellery.

5. Violet Hill Boutique

A Steveston stop specifically for the ladies! One of my favourite boutique’s in Vancouver, let alone steveston. Everytime I shop there I feel like I have purchased something that is one of a kind.

A Movies for Mommies Interview with Laura Grady

Describe the Movies for Mommies Experience

Movies For Mommies is just that— film screenings with stroller parking, reduced volume, and increased lighting to let new parents (yes, dad’s can come too) catch a flick while tending to their babies. That means everything from breastfeeding, comforting cries and even pacing them if necessary.

How did you become involved with Movies for Mommies?

A stay-at-home mom to a three-year-and-a-half-year-old-son, I didn’t want to return to my pre-baby office job and was looking for a way to supplement my income as a freelance writer. When the licence came up for sale, I jumped at the opportunity.

What is your favourite part about running the event?

As the owner of Movies for Mommies, I love planning these movie events for new moms. What better way to feel a little ‘normal’ again than by packing up the baby and watching a flick on the big screen? I am a movie buff and the thought of missing out on popcorn and trips to the theatre just wouldn’t do. With Movies For Mommies us moms can stay up-to-date on the latest releases (no need to wait till they’re out on DVD) and best of all, we can save the babysitter for date-night.

What is the biggest lesson you have learned or biggest challenge you have had since starting the M4M event in Vancouver?

My biggest challenge, as with all moms, is trying to balance work and being a mom. I work part-time and I’m a full-time mom, so it’s hard to juggle the two. I’ve learned to set manageable work tasks each day. If I check off two things on my ‘to-do-list’, I’m thrilled.

How do you like to spend time as a family?

We love swimming! We can be found at the pool at least once a week. Reading, puzzles and competitive games of Memory are daily after dinner activities

Tell us about Movies For Mommies Date night

I am excited about my first Movies For Mommies Date Night at the Denman Cinema- same movies for mommies fun, now at night. Moms and Dads can enjoy a movie together with their baby. As usual, the lights in the theatre will be brighter, sound levels will be turned down and stroller parking is provided. It’s just a fun chance to get out of the house together without having to book a babysitter. There will be lots of great activities: Gymboree will be there for some playtime before the movie, Lullaby League will be there chatting about their babysitter services and the ‘one and only Melissa Skoda’ will be offering free family photos (with free photo greeting cards from Sendout Cards). Lots of door prizes too!

What is your favourite date night spot with the kids and without the kids?

My favourite date night spot would have to be the movie theatre. I host all the Movies for Mommies events, but I rarely get to see a film myself. There is nothing better than escaping into a great movie!

The first Movies For Mommies Date Night is taking place at the Denman Cinema on Feb 27th! Tickets are $10 and include a drink and popcorn. Movie is at 7pm, but come early for all the excitement! Doors at 6pm. More info on the Movies For Mommies Fanpage

Hope to see you and your baby there!

Little Earth

Little Earth is a new kids clothing and toy store located on the east side of Vancouver. It’s full of pre-loved consignment clothes, new clothes, art, toys and books. They even have lovely wooden mobiles that were brought over from Germany.

I love the idea of consignment clothes, especially for little kids as they grow so quickly. Although I don’t have kids myself, a lot of my friends who are new mom’s can attest to the fact that a lot of the clothes that they buy, are barely worn; if worn at all. So why not recycle and reuse clothes that are practically new!

Last weekend Little Earth hosted a shopping event for mom’s to come and check out their store. I was there with Phebe Trotman of Send out cards  taking photos of the kids and offering the mom’s 5 complimentary photo greeting cards.  Little Earth also offered 20% off of consignment clothing while the mommies waited to get their photos taken.

I look forward to coming back in June, just in time for Father’s Day!

Steveston Style with the Kershaw's

The light this winter has been absolutely fantastic and the day I photographed these images was no different. Just a little sneak peek into this session…

6 wintery images with the Eddine Family

When I was first introduced to 19 month old Madhy, he was a little shy and turned the other way when I said ‘hello’. He was adorable in his little striped blazer, so I let him just run around and look at the old boats in the Shipyard. I snapped the first shot in this post, as he was taking in the scenery. It was a beautiful wintery day full of dark clouds and the sun hovering in the distance. It made for a beautiful backdrop for these images.

This is the first of two sessions that I will be photographing with the ‘Eddine’ family, as little Madhy has a brother on the way soon. We photographed the family with the bump and once the baby is born, we will photograph the family with the new edition. I love to blend these sessions together and already can’t wait to show them the images. To me, the magic is in the story and the emotion behind each image

Before the session I asked Moe what he wanted to capture most and not forget about his family now. He said ‘I don’t want to forget our precious moments that we spend together. The brightness in their eyes and the smile on their faces are the true proof of love and happiness and I would like to save these forever.’

Beautiful.

Gabriela

Introducing Gabriela! I had a lovely saturday afternoon with Johanna and Cam taking these photos. The thing I love about photographing babies is that you run on their schedule. We took pictures in between feeds, changes and little bouts of tears. (She didn’t like it when we put certain hats on her. ha… fair enough.) Enjoy these frames for now… more to come soon!

Sneak Peek Maternity Session at a secret location

I was really excited when I heard about Kristin’s parents dock. It sounded amazing! And sure enough, when I met Kristin and Corey yesterday afternoon they lead me down a very hidden (and steep!) back lane to get here. And sure enough, when I arrived, it was exactly how I pictured it.

Stunning.

This is part one of a two part session. I often split up the session to  photograph the baby bump and then the baby when it arrives to create an fun, yet emotional story.

Looking forward to meeting the new edition in 2012! Thanks for a fun afternoon and sharing your secret location with me:)
